Is it actually good etiquette to apologise to a mailing list for sending an email that was supposed to be private to it, or can people just not help themselves?

I have a perverse desire to respond to Giles's post to the Shambles ("The US BoD President is saying that "each and every participant" has a valid voice, unless you are from Lochac") by pointing out that he's excluding Finland. But I don't think it would be very constructive.

So I lost my metrocard this morning, sometime between getting on the bus and trying to catch a bus home. Rang up to try and freeze it and they inform me I haven't used my card for 4 years, so I must have been using someone else's card somehow... but the good news is, the one I just lost had $10 on it and the old one they just froze had $65!

My CD from Borders arrived on Friday and luckily it is a really good album. It's Inland Territory from Vieanna Teng. I love the way with her songs I find some of them very beautiful in terms of the music, and then when I start to pay attention to the lyrics suddenly the ones I wasn't really attached to before come into focus and really give me chills (just happened with No Gringo and Radio this morning as I listened to them for about the 10th time)

Very unimpressed with Borders' Special Order process. I ordered a CD back in April, while I was up in Auckland and arranged for it to be delivered to my Christchurch address. I had to pay for the whole thing up front because I wouldn't be coming back into the shop to pick it up.

Two months later when I was next up in Auckland, I went to see why it had taken so long and it turned out they'd lost the order. They took a copy of my copy of the order form and said they'd get back to me.

A few days later the called to say they'd got in touch with the vendor and it was 2-3 weeks away. Then, a week later, they called and told me the exact same story (as though they had no knowledge of the first time).

Yesterday I got a message on my phone saying the CD was ready to be picked up from Queen Street. I phoned them and said it was supposed to be delivered to my address in Christchurch. They said they didn't think so, because I hadn't paid the $5 delivery charge or given them my address. I did give them my address, I have it right here in front of me on my copy of the order form. And nobody ever mentioned a delivery charge until then.

I grumped at them sufficiently for them to waive the delivery charge but the phone call probably cost that much anyway.

It better be a good CD!

I was just at my local GP's. They are asking you to sanitise your hands when you enter and all the staff are wearing masks. There are also masks outside the door which you are required to put on before entering if you have a cough or runny nose. It was especially creepy entering the pharmacy where 4 staff were drifting around in masks without any customers in sight.

    WTF, Life on Mars?!

Also, thank you Enver Gjokaj for the most convincing one-character-in-another-character's-body scene I have ever seen.

Does anyone know where (in Christchurch) I could find "travel sized" playing cards? They're for tablet weaving so it doesn't actually matter whether they're regular playing cards. Some cheap boardgame that comes with small cards with rounded edges would do fine. Places that do not have them: Whitcoulls, Paper Plus, the Warehouse, Kmart, the ex-$2 shop in South City, the airport bookshop. I may try Toyworld next.

Preliminary travel plans for Eastern Europe trip August-September:

(Plan is pretty detailed but still subject to change- especially relating to when S&P can do the Russian segment)

Planning to spend a few days in London, then head off to:

Slovakia- hike through the Slovak Paradise and then through the Tatras into Poland, visit Krakow, Auschwitz, Wieliczka Salt Mine - Kylie thinks she may be able to join me for this leg which would be good because hiking through mountains alone is best avoided

Croatia- Visit Zagreb and the Plitvice Lakes, head into Slovenia, see Ljubljana, Bled + Bohinj, Predjama Castle and some of their World Heritage caves, back into Croatia and down the Istrian coast, hydrofoil to Venice and fly out of Bologna to...

Moscow then St Petersburg with S&P, few days in Finland, Tallinn, then back to London and home

Any suggestions of where I could buy red silk yarn, since the fibreholics lady is snubbing me? It needs to be:
    a) between about 12 and 30 km/kg
    b) under $100 for at least 400m

Edit: aaah, fibreholics lady just got back to me! Hooray!

Yesterday: 5 hrs work, then ice skating, dinner and drinks on the CEO, and then we watched a shipping container as 2 dudes in scuba gear let off thousands of fireworks inside it. Or possibly just stood around inside it while the fireworks were automatically set off.

On the downside, when I got to my hostel on Monday night, they had no record of my booking and insisted I'd never made one (stupidly I didn't have my confirmation number with me) so I booked in for one night and then dragged my stuff back to the office in the morning, in case I'd accidentally been booked into a. Once I had the confirmation code, I called them back, and the reception guy straight away said "That won't help- we lost all our booking information a few weeks back". Great communication at that place!

BUT CEO told me last night work would pay up to $100 a night for my accomodation (About a year ago Tobias got shot down for requesting a $70 a night room and I haven't tried to push the issue since), which means, hooray, ensuite bathrooms in my future!

Aah! Apparently Rowan did send me pieces of the Pel cloak to do... I assumed I didn't get any because I never heard back from her, but she must have gone ahead and posted them to wherever I was living last time she posted me stuff (I was expecting more emailing to go on before the posting happened). Crap!

I got tired of not having a last name so I've decided to be Amalie von Brisache (in the SCA, just in case anyone is confused).

I'll be pronouncing it as it would be in modern German, until I learn better. Roughly, "Brisache" sounds like "Bree-zucker". And "Amalie" rhymes with "Natalia", in case anyone hasn't picked that up yet.
