Is it actually good etiquette to apologise to a mailing list for sending an email that was supposed to be private to it, or can people just not help themselves?

Generally, I think it's good form-- an 'oops, sorry' tells the list that it was unintentional and not to start discussing the contents.

Thanks. I always felt it was like going "I now spam you to apologise for spamming you" and thought I was being polite by refraining, but I guess I made the wrong call there.

Maybe just putting Apologies before the auto subject would be a good thing too - just so people don't think that you're adding to the conversation. eg

The private email had subject:
Re SGDiscuss: Tourney

Apology email has subject:
Apologies: Re SGDiscuss: Tourney

Then it would stop people having to click on the email just in case you said something interesting. They can just do the two click deleting thing.
